Saskatchewan's Online Library for Health Professionals

Q: Who is eligible to use the SHIRP library?

A: The SHIRP library is available to:

  • Healthcare providers working in Saskatchewan that belong to a legislated practice group
  • Saskatchewan health region employees
  • Employees of Government of Saskatchewan departments related to health
  • Faculty and students enrolled in health programs at the University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, and SIAST

Q: Can I use the SHIRP library from any computer?

A: If you wish to access the SHIRP online library from outside of a health region facility, you must obtain a user name and password by visiting the SHIRP website at a computer located outside of a health region facility, clicking on the “create new account” link underneath the login box, and filling out the online form. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, your account will be activated.

Q: A long time ago I received a set of user names and passwords for individual SHIRP resources and they don’t work anymore - how come?

A: In January 2009, SHIRP switched over to a new system where you only need a single user name and password to access all of the resources on our site. If you have not yet created an account to replace your original set of user names and passwords, you can do so by visiting the SHIRP website at a computer located outside of a health region facility, clicking on the “create new account” link underneath the login box, and filling out the online form. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, your new account will be activated.

Q: What’s the difference between SHIRP and other health libraries in the province?

A: All of the resources available on the SHIRP website are also available through the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region Library intranet site; the Saskatoon Health Region Library intranet site; The University of Saskatchewan Library website; The University of Regina website; and the SIAST library website. These libraries may have purchased additional resources for their patrons as well.

Q: What’s the difference between SHIRP and NurseOne?

A: There is some overlap between the two sites in terms of the resources provided; however, both the SHIRP library and NurseOne have some materials that the other does not.

Q: Can I suggest a book or journal for the SHIRP library?

A: We do accept suggestions for new resources and keep them on file for future reference.
